Kenya 3/4, possibly last post on the blog

Sorry, I probably will not be able to make more updates to the blog.
Thanks for looking.

July 27, 2017
Lake Elementaita
Sunbird Lodge, just some feeder birds in the morning.
Village Weaver (Black-headed)

Baglafecht Weaver

Hildebrandt's Francolin

Kenya Rufous Sparrow

Tropical Boubou

Streaky Seedeater

 Speckled Mousebird

Speckled Pigeon

Red-winged Starling

Superb Starling

Red-cheeked Cordonbleu

Purple Grenadier

 Fischer's x Yellow-collared Lovebird
ebird shows hybrids are common in this area so I just reported all of these as hybrids, without attempting to claim pure species. They are both introduced from Tanzania.

Swallow
not sure which one

Pied Crow

Olive Pigeon
bathing at water fountain

Red-chested Cuckoo
You hear the cuckoos more than you see them

Rock Hyrax

Lake Bogoria and hotel
Two ostriches stroll outside the hotel, I don't know how did they get here, but they are used to having people watching them.
Common Ostrich

White-browed Cuckoo

Fork-tailed Drogo

Gray-headed Kingfisher
found these kingfishers with interesting coloration, different from all the Asian species I've seen.

Jackson's Hornbill

Rüppell's Starling
Honestly, I did not know what family these are when I first saw them. They kind of look like Brewer's Blackbird body with grackle's tail.

A young one is foraging on its own.

Marabou Stork

Vervet Monkey
one of my friends dubbed it as the blue balled monkey.

D'Arnaud's Barbet

Not good at telling the Greater and Lesser flamingos apart, but the one on the right is a lot taller thus a greater.

Greater Flamingo

Lesser Flamingo
There's about half a million of them here, chances are that there's a thousand of them in the picture, though probably some greater too.

 Spur-winged Lapwing

Superb Starling

 White-browed Sparrow-Weaver

Lake Bogoria
I'm posting more than a few flamingo pictures.
Same as the previous day, mostly Lesser Flamingos. At around dawn, couple hundreds here and couple thousands there start flying in.

find you own greater flamingos in the next couple flocks.

 ah, there they are.

Ruff
 Ruff and a Curlew Sandpiper
Looks like there are some smaller ones in the flock, but I'm not sure what they are.

Bat Hawk
look the same as the ones found in SE Asia.

African Pied Wagtail

Fork-tailed Drongo

Elsamere Camp(no camping)
I think Guereza Colobus were rehabbed here, and now they roam freely, but I don't remember their history at Elsamere clearly.

Lake Naivasha
Hippos

Little Grebe
Unlike the Asian ones, which have yellow eyes, I'm familiar with, they just look different with the dark eyes.

Red-Knobbed Coot

Black Crake
another rail in the open! A surprise treat for us.

Sacred Ibis
they are invasive in Taiwan. I payed more attention to them in their native range.

Yellow-billed Stork

Marabou Stork

Great Egret

Gray Heron

Striated Heron
thought they prefer creeks so I was surprised and happy to get this bird on a lake.

Black-crowned Night-Heron

Hamerkop

Pink-backed Pelican?

Long-tailed Cormorant
 cormorant colony

Pied Kingfisher

Giant Kingfisher
lucky to see a male and a female. Female has the gray on the chest

Kenya Rufous Sparrow

Grey Woodpecker

African Fish Eagle

5/29
Elsamere Camp(no camping)
Couple of birds before we depart.

 Gray-capped Warbler
this bird is placed next to Prinias in the guide I'm using, and it is the only member of its genus in Kenya.

Ol Kinyei Conservancy
This conservancy is near the world renown Masai Mara where a large number of animals cross Mara River.
Soon after our arrival, we heard that a family of cheetahs were found so we rushed to see them. The two young and the mother were enjoying a Thompson's Gazelle.

Lion

Black-backed Jackel

Thomopson's Gazelle

Impala

Topi

Wildebeeste

Vervet Monkey
 Couple Vultures

African White-backed Vulture

Lappet-faced Vulture
